NLB Whole Village Initiative an Ambitious Joint Effort

U.S. Congresswoman Janice Hahn Applauds Initiative by Councilmember Rex Richardson and LBUSD Board Member Megan Kerr to Enlist the "Whole Village" to Impact North Long Beach Students' Lives

Councilmember Rex Richardson and Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) Board Member Megan Kerr announced a collaboration Tuesday, October 14th, establishing the North Long Beach “Whole Village” Initiative. The Whole Village Initiative is a dual effort to support schools and youth in the North Long Beach area, with a focus on improving conditions and outcomes for boys and young men of color.

Joining in the announcement was U.S. Congresswoman Janice Hahn, who applauded the effort and supported the goal of tying efforts like these to President Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative.

“I applaud Rex Richardson and Megan Kerr for their leadership in creating the Whole Village Initiative," said Congresswoman Janice Hahn.  "I look forward to continuing to work with them and all concerned community residents on behalf of North Long Beach youth. It does indeed take a village, the whole village, to raise, support, mentor, protect and inspire our youth so it’s encouraging that the Task Force includes educators and others who engage with our youth at the libraries and Parks & Recreation, faith leaders, local businesses and others.  Together we can draw from examples of what is working well elsewhere while we develop a plan and strategy uniquely suited for North Long Beach.”
