Lets Talk: Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library Naming

Writer Libba Bray stated that "The library card is a passport to wonders and miracles, glimpses into other lives, religions, experiences, the hopes and dreams and strivings of ALL human beings, and it is this passport that opens our eyes and hearts to the world beyond our front doors, that is one of our best hopes against tyranny, xenophobia, hopelessness, despair, anarchy, and ignorance".  Naming the new North Long Beach Library after our first lady, Michelle Obama, serves as a mechanism for our youth to connect and identify with the legacy she has built and continues to do so, today.

On December 22nd, the Long Beach City Council voted unanimously to move forward with our proposal to begin the process of naming the "Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library." The North Branch Library, slated to open in the late summer of 2016, will be the largest neighborhood branch library in the city and serve as state-of-the-art focal point for North Long Beach.

While we had an overwhelming number of residents attend the meeting to voice their support for the concept, we will be conducting further outreach to gather more input and build consensus.

Please join us on Thursday, Jan. 21st, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Houghton Park for a community discussion on the proposal. We hope to see you there!
