Big Turnout for #ActivateUptown! (Photos Inside)

This past Saturday we were joined by over 10,000 community members for the biggest block party Uptown has ever seen.  #ActivateUptown was a huge success!

From 10 am-5 pm, we shut down Artesia Boulevard from Atlantic Avenue to Orange Avenue to vehicular traffic and opened the streets up to walking, cycling, and skateboarding. We had live music on three different stages, a live mural installation, sidewalk chalk art, a basketball showcase and more!

We were honored to have social activist and rapper Talib Kweli, American Hip Hop legend MURS, and 90's alternative Hip Hop pioneers The Pharcyde headline our premiere music festival, Village Fest

Roxanne's Cocktail Lounge sponsored two beer gardens and presented the Uptown Rock & Soul Stage where we heard eclectic sounds of funk, jazz, rockabilly, and soul from many talented artists including SimbalaSea Funk Brass Band, and Seatbelt. Additionally, DJ Gloss provided us with great music, and 23 Seeds of Greatness- Jordan High's Xi Sister & Omega Brothers performed a step-show.

New Blues Festival producer, Bill Grisolia, brought us the New Blues Stage
featuring the best in local blues bands including,The New Blues RevolutionDEBi & the GrooveMakers, and Bernie Pearl.

VBL.jpgVenice Basketball League (VBL) put on an amazing show! They had slam dunk contests, a celebrity basketball game, a fraternity vs. fire department game, and a youth clinic. Def Jam Recording Artist Vince Staples also joined us on the court as a celebrity judge! Check out pictures from the Street Hoop Showcase here.

We had a wide variety of vendors selling everything from jewelry to hats to soaps, lotions, and t-shirts. Along the route was great food, snacks and refreshments, along with two different kid zones where children had the opportunity to create buttons, balloon animals, water-paint pictures, and get their faces painted.

Additionally, there were showcases of classic 50's cars and custom Harley Davidson motorcycles brought to you by Pharaoh's Car Club, and local custom Harley shop, Dirtbag Baggers.

There was truly something for everybody! This amazing day would not have been possible without all of our dedicated staff, the business community, residents, partners, and sponsors.
